How to Journal Better?

Journaling is as easy or as hard as you make it. If you view it as a rigid chore, it will feel like one. Most of us start that way, and that's okay — over time, we learn what fits.

Think of journaling as an open field: there are no set paths to get from Point A to Point B. In fact, you don't even need to "get" anywhere. You can just stand still and admire the view.

There are no rules. Your entries can be long-form memories from years ago, a passing thought about a friend, or a quick note on a recent event. It can be short, it can be gibberish, it can be whatever you need it to be.

Use this as a starting point when you feel stuck, but don't let it box you in. If your mind wants to meander, let it. If you want to get straight to the point, do that. Let your thoughts find their own way.

And to quote Hemmingway.

No subject is terrible if the story is true, if the prose is clean and honest, and if it affirms courage and grace under pressure.

A little friend for a Wandering Mind

  • Do I have to do it daily?

No, not really. Don't journal just because everyone says you have to. We’re not machines; we're people. We take time to process, and often we gather our best insights through quiet reflection rather than forced output. Sometimes you just need a little space to think. Don't force it — that’s the quickest way to burn out. If a daily rhythm works for you, go for it. But if you hate the pressure, only write when the words actually want to come out.

  • My journal entries are always short, i feel guilty?

Not at all. It's not a race. If you feel guilty, you’re likely treating it like a competition. Take a step back, you don’t need to record every detail just to fill a page. There is nothing wrong with short entries; they are often the best way to capture a specific moment without the fluff.

  • Should I do it daily anyway?

Heck yes, by writing in your journal daily, you're giving yourself time to reflect, adjust and change course if you have to. It keeps you mindful and in the moment. This also turns into a consistent habit and years down the line when you look back at the things you've written you'll be quite surprised by how you've changed and grown.
