Maple Leaves 🍁

Maple leaves are collectible items in the app that also act as currency. You can acquire maple leaves by focusing for a certain duration.

Hearts 🩷

Hearts are another collectible item in Otto, representing life and health. Full health makes Otto happy. If health reaches zero, Otto dies.

Death 💀

When Otto dies, it turns into a ghost. You can still use all functionalities without restriction.

How does the game mechanic work?

Previously, the game mechanic was straightforward: focus for more than 25 minutes to gain full health and maple leaves. However, in the recent update (1.0.28), the system has become more dynamic.

Now, Otto uses a probabilistic algorithm to calculate rewards for a session based on three factors:

  • Total time focused per session
  • Total number of cycles per session
  • Total number of distractions per session

Based on these factors, Otto decides whether you receive rewards and how much. There are limits to how much you can acquire per session:

  • Maple leaves: 0 to 3 leaves per session
  • Hearts: up to 20 hearts per session

On average, you can expect to gain 1-2 maple leaves per session. Gaining 3 leaves is more challenging. The algorithm is more generous with hearts.

How to maximize the outcomes?

The longer you focus, the more rewards you get. Other factors, like distractions and focus cycles, also play a role.

What can you do with these rewards?

  • Hearts: Keep Otto healthy and alive. When Otto runs out of hearts, he dies.
  • Maple leaves: Can be used as currency to revive Otto. The maximum number of maple leaves you can have is 15. Any leaves collected beyond this limit will not count.

What happens when you get distracted?

When you get distracted and try to open a blocked website while a timer is running, you will see a "This page is blocked" message, and Otto will lose 5 hearts.

What happens when Otto dies?

If you get distracted frequently, Otto's health may reach zero, causing Otto to die and turn into a ghost. If you have enough maple leaves, you can use them to revive Otto. If not, you can still do focus sessions and collect leaves to revive Otto. Hearts collected when Otto is dead have no effect.

How do I know what rewards I receive?

Every time you complete a focus session longer than 15 minutes, a popup will appear on the screen when you stop the timer showing your rewards. If you prefer not to see this popup, you can turn it off using the switch button at the bottom.
